3/26/17 My family and I went to Rivercity Lanes; for games, bowling lunch and fun. Today was not a special occasion for us; simply a beautiful Sunday in which we wanted to spend quality time together laughing and having fun. However, this did not happen. You see, I have a daughter with special needs, and she was unable to understand why she could not have a toy that was on display in the arcade room.I asked to purchase the toy and avoid causing a scene. The owner stated that the toy was not for cash sale and the only way to get it was through tickets won in the arcade. (I would have paid $200 for the barbie doll just to see my family have fun, and yes I had the $200 on me.) Instead, I had to escort my daughter out of the building as she screamed and hurt herself. My husband asked for a refund as I had just paid for four games of bowling. My husband was provided a card, a card in which could only be used inside that establishment and no where else.
Confused, I went inside and requested a cash refund, as we paid for bowling and never even touched the lanes or got our shoes. I was informed that the owner was there, however, he did not want to talk to me; instead, he requested that I call the manager tomorrow to discuss my issue.
I found the owner inside the bar watching a very important basketball game, Florida vs Carolina. During our conversation, I requested several times for a cash refund as we will not be coming back to this establishment, and the card provided would not be useful anywhere else. The owner stated that he will not handle this today, and that I would need to call the manager tomorrow. Also stated that it is against company policy for staff to give cash refunds. I understood this information, however, did not understand why the owner was unable to provide the refund, after all he is the owner. The owner then stated, what he may have thought was appropriate, however, as a mother of a special needs child, he verbaly sliced my heart into tiny pieces. "I'm sorry for your difficult situation." "I'm sorry you have a difficult child." "It's not my staffs fault your child is having a difficult time." "My wife use to teach special needs children so we know how difficult it can be." "I don't know your economic situation but I will not handle this today." "I'm sorry for your family." "I feel sorry for your situation." "Thank you for taking your child outside and not cause a scene for our normal customers." And more.
All I wanted was the same respect as a person that I gave to him, his customers, and his establishment. I did not allow my child to disrupt other families and individuals, I did not allow my child to cause a scene, and I did not raise my voice or cause a scene when I requested a refund. After the owner had thanked me for not disturbing his 'normal customers', I handed him the card and informed him that he can give it to one of his 'normal customers' that he has and went to the parking lot. The owner came out and requested my address, this was incase him and 'tomorrows manager' decides that they will provide me a cash refund and mail it to me. I asked him to please allow me time to think about whether or not providing my address was worth the $36 from him. And again asked him to forget about my family as well as myself as we were never customers nor will we ever be customers at his establishment. After he explained again what his wife use to do for employment, he walked away.
Through all of this going on, my other children were inside playing games, as I did not want their day ruined as well. Soon, he decided that in order for his staff to not see that a cash refund was provided to me and to make things better for myself and my difficult situation he would hand me $36 from his wallet. He apologized again for me having a difficult daughter and again for my difficult situation. We drove away.
My daughter is not defined by her special needs. She is beautiful, smart, caring and perfectly unique. She has crossed milestones that we were told would never happen. She is who she is,and I wouldn't have it any other way.
